Me and Dad
Sprawled on the picnic table looking at the stars one night.

It was midsummer and Dad was midstory
Trying to remember a word
Describing when a hen has laid a number of eggs
But not enough yet

She stays on the nest for 21 days until they all hatch at once
I knew the word
It was "broody"

Dad was impressed that I knew it
I was eight
We were connected
Then, as now,
by this obscurity
