R.I.P., Eight Belles
The spell was broken at the Derby today when Eight Belles went down on the track. Women in large hats were still high-fiving their men, and drinks were spilling on the seats. Slowly the realization made its way through the haze of mint and sugar-syrup that Death had come to Louisville on this fine May day.
The jockey's horror and sadness were plain as he leapt nimbly off the falling filly. The veterinarian's eyes were wet as he explained to the ESPN correspondent what had to be done.
Belles' run with the boys did us proud, just the same.
